Come and join us on National Cycle Network Route 1 in Ryhope to learn the 800 year old art of hedgelaying. Some of the hedges on this route have been left to grow quite tall and as a result have become quite "leggy" meaning that hedge has gaps near the ground. Using traditional tools and techniques we will lay the hedge by cutting away material from the stem of each tree allowing them to be laid. As well as creating a stock-proof barrier it also provides better habitat for small mammals, encourages the trees to produce more flowers, berries and nectar and prolongs the life of the hedge.

Meeting point: Pedestrian crossing on south side of A1018, Ryhope. See link for exact location
What to bring/wear: Wear sturdy footwear with good grip as the ground may be muddy and uneven. Make sure to be prepared for all weather conditions - bring warm, waterproof clothing. Long sleeves and long trousers are essential. Please also bring with you a packed lunch and refreshments. Tools and protective equipment will be provided as will hot drinks and biscuits.
Other Information: Please note that there are no public toilets on the route. The hedge is a 15 min walk or 6 min cycle from the meeting location. Under 18s must be accompanied by an *****. If you have any questions email me at

This workday is a part of Sustrans' Greener Greenways project which looks to improve our traffic-free routes for people and wildlife
