On 1 December 2017,at 9:25am Olivia Glynis-Jean Champ, our second daughter was born at Medway Hospital. We were so excited. But, straight away, I knew something wasn't right as she was grunting too much and then, before we knew it, she was rushed to Oliver Fisher Ward 'just to be safe'.

Then she was hooked up to machines to help her breathe. Before we knew it, she had completely crashed, saw eight doctors around her bed, alarms going off and, all of a sudden, no one would tell us that she would be ok. All they would say was that she was 'stable'

Wasn't easy being told that the only treatment that was left for our little girl was ECMO, basically a heart and lung bypass. Awful at the best of times, let alone on a two day old baby. Little baby, lots of wires.

The look on their faces when they spoke about ECMO made it obvious how serious it was. Words like stroke, complications, risks were mentioned but, if she needed it and didn't have it, then she wouldn't make it.

When she was strong enough to be moved, we were blue-lighted to Great Ormund Street in the early hours and she was hooked up to all sorts of machines. Literally a room of machines to keep her ticking.

Weeks went by, two ventilators, gases and drugs that we couldn't pronounce and a load of sleepless nights. Non-stop attention from all of the staff, and even the Medway doctors called us at GOSH to see how Livvy, and we, were doing. By the grace of God, she eventually started to improve and ECMO wasn't needed. In due course, we were home just before Christmas as a complete family but not out of the woods entirely.

We know that what we can do is a drop in the ocean but we need to do something to at least try to make it clear what the work these miracle workers do means to the parents who otherwise wouldn't have their children.

We can never do enough, but that doesn't mean we can't try :)
