This year, Scottish Provincial Press, publisher of The Inverness Courier, Strathspey & Badenoch Herald, Ross-shire Journal, The Northern Times and John O'Groat Journal, launches its first Highland Heroes Awards.

Highland Heroes is an award scheme recognising the people in the Highlands who make a real difference to our communities, healthcare, education, safety and wellbeing.

Nominations are now open for this year's awards with a deadline for entries of Monday 11th September.

The twelve award categories are as follows:

Community Champion of the year-
An individual who goes out of their way to help others and who has made a significant contribution to their community.

Secondary Teacher of the year -
A secondary school teacher who inspires pupils, helping them to achieve their full academic potential.

Primary Teacher of the year -

A primary school teacher who has made a significant difference to the learning experience of pupils.

Classroom Assistant of the year -
A classroom assistant who has made a huge difference in their school, contributing to the teaching, learning and support of the children in their care

Emergency Services Hero -
An outstanding member of the emergency services who has gone above and beyond the call of duty.

Healthcare Professional of the year -
An individual within the healthcare sector who has provided a service above and beyond the call of duty, improving or making a positive impact on the quality of life of another.

Charity Fundraiser of the year -
An individual who devotes his or her time and effort for inspirational charity work.

Brave Child of the year -
A child who has overcome extreme adversity or shown exceptional courage or bravery in their life

Secondary Pupil of the year -
A secondary pupil who has achieved something beyond expectations in education, sport orhelping others at school

Primary Pupil of the year -
A primary school pupil who has achieved something beyond expectations in education, sport or helping others at school

Good Neighbour -
Someone who has gone the extra mile to be a kind, considerate and helpful neighbour.

Volunteer of the year -
An individual who has been exceptional in volunteering their time and talents to help others.


The award winners will be announced at the Highland Heroes awards ceremony which is being held at the Kingsmills Hotel, Inverness on Thursday November 9.
